Being a volunteer at my local library is very relaxing. Especially during school days where I don’t get a lot of kids coming into the library. The best thing about working at the library is being able to get the first opportunity to read a newly released novel. The worst thing about working at the library is yelling at kids to be quiet. I don’t like to raise my voice but if I have to tell someone three or four times to quiet down, I will. Plus I don’t like being that stereotypical librarian who tells children to “shush.” Most of the time I’ll let the loud talking go, if there’s not a lot of people in the library. On one hot summer weekend, the library was very busy. Because of the large crowd, the library was beginning to feel really warm. I went to the programmable thermostat to lower the air conditioner temperature but for some reason it wasn’t working. I called the HVAC provider that normally comes to our library and inspects our system. He inspected the HVAC system and called to my attention that the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) was low. This wasn’t a very good thing because this meant that there was low energy efficiency. This also means that the library is wasting energy and paying more money to run the system than they should be. I called the director and asked for her opinion because the technician suggested that the air conditioning system be updated. The director agreed to go along with it, since the HVAC system was outdated.
